    New Chat Room

We've looked into having a chat room but unfortunately it doesn't look like vBulletin Cloud will allow that. So SgtPepper was kind enough to create a Discord chat room for us. Thank you SgtPepper!

Audiogen has it listed under "Messaging", beneath "Message Center". So if you're a chat person come on in.

SgtPepper was kind enough to set up a chat room for the site on Discord. If you're on laptop you just need the link; if you're on phone you will need the Discord app. I was advised not to post the link in the forums so if you're interested in joining in the chat room pm me and I'll send it to you.

I was told internet bots could pick up the link and start spamming.

i like the idea of a chat but if it isn't actually on the forum i don't see the benefit. i want the link though : )
have we explored whether a chat box thing is possible here?

I've looked into it but the good ones cost money. I think there are probably free ones out there but I'm not sure whether to trust them or not.

cool. what kind of costs, just out of interest? that's something i'd put high on the list for if we can consistently find more money than we currently need.

I tried but it reminded me why abandoned joining discord a couple years ago... "the only password you are capable of remembering isn't complicated enough"

                      Well then fuck you

that's easy just get in the practise of using 3 for E etc then it can be a simple word that becomes a more complex series of letters and numbers.

and also hi! noticed your absence. assumed you were work-busy. had a good week?

i'm fine with letters and numbers. my issue is when they require a special character; none of my standard passwords have that so any site that does require it just gets one of my standards with an exclamation point at the end, and then i immediately forget that i did that and i end up having to reset the password every time.

i suppose an option there would be to use ! for i or @ for a, or something like that.

I'm sure you're not supposed to do this but I have a Word document with my passwords listed. I just copy/paste.

It's a conspiracy. And it's aimed at the aging. Making us change passwords on a regular basis, I have to several times a year where I work, is playing games to test our memories. As more and more of our lives become electronic, passwords become a serious Achilles heel. Years ago I had 4 passwords. One of them I used for work shit, one for illegal shit, another for family shit and one as a spare.

But now they keep track of my old ones so I don't reuse them. Which means they wear out my potential for creating new ones. I'm being forced to become more and more clever with this. And I have a finite capability when it comes to clever. Eventually I have to repeat the sequence, which now means I've developed a duplicate password. And then another and another. I sets me up for hacking when they keep a running tally of my past passwords.

I expect if I live 20 more years I'll be nearly blind and permanently stoned due to dementia or demonic possession. I'm not going to remember any passwords and won't be able to key it into anything as my carpal tunnel will have migrated into my shoulders. Our authentication systems have not evolved very well at all. I shouldn't have to do anything more than look at my computer to get it started.

And where the hell is my flying car? The Jetsons were from 2064. Do we really have to wait another 44 years? Fuuuuuuuccccckkkkk

I have seen "1" for "I" and "@" for "A" plenty of times. Some boards want you to throw in an occasional capitol letter when possible. Tough for my old brain to remember.

Same here. So I have been using classes of passwords. For a while I use snack foods, then porn actors, then beer brands. Even when I forget a password, there's a chance 1 of the 4 or 5 swimming about will work. And the idea that adding symbols for letters fools anyone is false security. A series of algorithms can solve that too easily. Like it or not, the keyboard only makes so many usable characters. To a computer this is not a difficult task, it just substitutes the symbols for letters until the password makes sense.

Rotating passwords is the only potential for security, keeping the same one for a long time is asking for trouble.

What I still don't get is why we have to bother with it in the 21st century. Of all places for software to drop the ball; authentication.

Fast forward: When I sit in front of the computer it makes an initial assessment of who I am and asks how my commute was. I respond with how fucked it was and that the radios play nothing but stupid morning shows with stupid DJ banter about weekend war stories, usually involving booze. This banter continues for a few seconds while the system lets me see a bit more at a time, as if it's looking around for what I'm requesting. My answers provide various voice prints and style cues. Ultimately the computer knows who I am, in a matter of seconds. Without any password talk.
