    Notifications are finicky

I’m writing to inform that sometimes my notifications show, and sometimes they don’t.

Sometimes I’ll get notified when I’m quoted, liked, or @ed. Sometimes I don’t.

Today I confirmed this when I went through a new thread, and saw that my name was mentioned with an @, but I was never notified. I’ve seen this before when my posts were liked, but I wasn’t given the notice.

I couldn’t find a tech support forum for tree fort. So I posted it here instead.

We only have indirect access to the server side, so there are a few finicky things we cannot really change manually. I tried contacting the hosting company for another issue at one point and they were no help at all.

Notifications are set to New only so sometimes if you get multiple New notifications and click on one, the other(s) will become dismissed before you click on them. If you go to the Notifications page through the Message Center, there is a filter drop down menu and if you click on Both, it will display New and Dismissed Notifications and you'll be able to see all recent notifications. I tried to find a way to set Both to the Default Setting but couldn't find a way.

WritersPanic 's panic mentioned that he takes the approach that when he receives multiple new notifications, he opens up each of them in a new tab, to prevent that behavior.

Although it doesn't sound like your issue, you may also want to check Notifications in your User Settings and verify that all the types of Notifications you want to receive are check marked.

Yeah man I'll have to try that opening the notifications in new tabs to prevent losing them all at once after checking 1

6-eyed If you follow my post #5 that would probably be the easiest as it's then just one click to see all your notifications.

i assume your @ed name was highlighted? a lot of people fuck up the @ing system and it doesn't actually go through as an @.

other than that, what audiogen said.

Let me know if this works. There is only one path used which might specify my own Notifications page which would prohibit it from working for others but I'm not sure.

^If that doesn't work, filter Both on your Notifications page and copy the URL on that page and send it to me and I'll make a custom link to your Notifications. Maybe we can have a thread with all the Custom Links for people who request them.

Yeah I've seen my name get highlighted, spelled correctly, and no notifications would be sent.

Sometimes I'd get 1 "like" notification. Then check the post to see that there are 3 likes.

I understand there are some limitations with a small server, but I thought I'd point out the minor flaws in case they are fixable.

It might happen when you are already on that thread. You won't get the notification.

i'm totally stumped on the @ one. but for the likes, i don't know if this is what you're talking about or not, but if 3 people like a post while you're signed out, you will come back to one notification that says "so and so and two others liked your post" instead of a single notification for each person who liked it.

I think the way the tagging system works is that you first put in the "@" sign and start typing someone's name, but you have to select the name that pops up as you type to get tagging to work reliably. Unless the tag has a mini-avatar pic next to it and is highlighted, it wasn't created correctly.

i'm pretty sure that doesn't work for comments. as long as you type in the name exactly right and remember to follow it with a space, it does always seem to work, at least in my experience. but selecting the pop-up is the best way to be positive you have it right.

Undies I think you are right

You won't get a pop-up in comments, but it will turn an exactly correct tag into avatar-and-highlighted form.

I'll try a crap tag and see what happens Undies

Ok, an uncapitalized crap tag worked too.

Sometimes I get a notification for like, say, "Mel made a post on your subscription.." and then the post it takes me to, she tagged me in. So it's like it could give two different notifications for the same post, and chooses one, and it's not always the one I would consider "most important".

But I don't care. Just an observation.

I like the finicky notifications :-) it makes it more like real life, when sometimes you don't hear something someone said

Since making this thread, I found out that notifications will quickly disappear if you are viewing a thread when you get a notification within that same thread. Especially if you refresh or turn the page. Seems not a lot can be done about this, but it’s good to know.

Yeah, if you get liked or quoted in a thread you are browsing in at the same time the site takes it as if you have seen them :P
