How Long Do You Keep Stuff In The Refrigerator Before Throwing It Away?

I got some leftover turkey casserole that's been in the fridge for about a week now. Should I toss it? Normally I only make enough food to last me three days, but with my vacation and all I have this leftover. I hate throwing stuff out too but don't want to get sick. Smells OK though.

I don't eat meat so I have less to worry about. Generally I give it a sniff and see if it seems off, which isn't a great measure of whether it is safe or not, but better than nothing lol.

So basically I'm the same as you - I hate throwing it out but also don't want to spend a day in the bathroom.

It's a good thing you don't think a fridge is long-term storage. I know a few people who don't get that.

What it is can be a substantial factor. Cold cut meats last longer than meat you cooked. Cooked meat varies by the type. Ham lasts longer than poultry. Beef can last longer than ham, but flavor drops substantially with each day.

If it's problematic, get a mutt!

If you're in a psychotic mood (it happens), save about 2 weeks worth, then cast it out near the home of someone who pissed you off (not too close to home though). You'll feel better getting a bit of revenge while their neighborhood turns into wild kingdom! It's therapeutic!

for some reason, stuff in my fridge never seems to go bad...

on the occasions that i do have leftovers, i tend to eat them within a day or two. if not, about a week is where i draw the line.

Here's a pro tip that will save you a few shekels, these refrigerators with the plastic shelves rely on a rather flimsy layer to hold the shelf in place. When they break, you get a floor full of groceries and a costly part to repair.

Instead, head to a decent hardware store and get some white epoxy (usually supplied as a 2 layer stick you knead together to activate). Just make sure you align the plastic parts according to how they need to be. The epoxy can only be applied to 1 side. But a generous glob of it will hold the shelf fastener together better than the original molded part. Most landlords over look this kind of repair.

Also, if you have to remove nail or tack holes from an apartment you're leaving, just use Gleem toothpaste to fill the holes. It's pure white and dries rock hard.

Depends on what it is. I really hate wasting food so i almost always eat everything i make or buy. Leftovers, usually about 4 or 5 days.

I draw the line at 2 days. If I don’t need it before that it usually sits in here for a couple weeks
