  • Abolish school

I keep hearing that suicide rate is way higher among the educated than the ignorant, even higher on average in rich countries than poor ones.

I meet a lot of ignorant people. At group today someone asked "what is bipolar... ....depression? That means being sad right?"

I mean, you gotta be pretty uneducated to be unsure what depression is. But this person, along with many simpletons I meet, seemed more content than the average lawyer or Dentist I meet, or Doctor like my mom , or older brother (who says he wants to kill himself (and he's a Doctor in the air Force with wife and kids).

I admit I'm ignorant in areas, but I do like to read and be informed and enhance vocabulary to speak eloquently. Most people I meet do not ( in the impoverished environments I live in), but they strike me as being less miserable, more easily satisfied, fewer worries as a general rule , than educated people.

I know I don't know the whole picture, but the only student suicide I dealt with in high school was a straight A student. That seems to be another example of education contributing to unhappiness.

Maybe uneducated people are not on average more content and easily entertained (less suicidal). I have seen countless examples of evidence that makes it look that way though.

    Your thoughts?

I want to be a school-abolitionist when I grow up.

I think Jessica knew the title wasn't serious, but it seems like I need to clarify ( as most don't have her keen abilities to read my intentions):

I don't believe school should be abolished.

There's different kinds of smarts. There's common sense smarts, too.

And though I often butt heads with such people, as I feel like an insane man shouting from the rooftops, they've got a major point and a place.

Woe to be so smart and not have a fixed end objective, as no one truly does.

All you can do, Matthew, is take your studies seriously. Your instincts are telling you where to look, they are, and all any man can do is move forward according to his instincts.

But for the love of God, forsake violence except as beyond the last resort.

Just me telling you what to do.

I imagine it would be difficult to be a criminal lawyer. You're bound, at some point, to either be defending complete monsters or attempting to prosecute potentially innocent people to many years beyond bars, if not death. That's got to weigh on one's conscience.

I WOULD abolish schools, as they currently stand! They're all wrong. There are niche schools doing it how it should be done but they run into trouble because they produce free and thinking adults, and society doesn't want more of those. A good school teaches in a way that is hard to test, and grade, because kids are so different than each other and regular schools try to homogenise them so that they CAN be graded. I could talk for hours about how I would run a school. If I'm ever a billionaire, I will found one.

I kinda just read it as a debate about how schools should be, but I was in a rush :-)

What's the main concerns you think where mainstream schools generally go wrong?

Well, if modification of school as you speak of it were in place I would probably have a Doctorate.

You don't wish to abolish school, just make some changes that are in need to be made for more healthy students and society.

I confessed in the OP that I was going by personal observation and what I have heard, not overwhelming consensus of credible studies.

I also mentioned things may not be as I perceive them to be. But I felt I have seen evidence that strongly suggests it has some truth on average with exceptions to the rule.

Shaggy 2Dope the Clown said it best:

                  "I'm 2Dope and I'm fuckin drunk ...
I dropped out of school when I quit my job
All I wanna be is a fat fuckin slob...
...suck my nuts bitch, Fuck you!"

Sounds like a happy successful guy as a general rule! I look up to him.

Suicide rates are usually higher among the uneducated; middle aged white males with high school education are twice as likely to commit suicide than someone with a bachelors degree of the same demographic. This is in the US, as of 2014. Women are much more likely to attempt suicide, but men succeed more often.

This all makes sense to me, though--folks with a high school diploma are likely to have a much more difficult life than folks without. Their lives are, on average, more difficult--less income, less security it life, more stressors.

I'm trying to remember, and maybe I will look into it later, but I think the whole "smart people are unhappy" thing is a common myth. It's hard to break that sort of misconception because once people start hearing it, they think of examples from their own life that support the myth.

The one I've heard which is a slight variation is that overall 1st world people rank as less happy than non-1st world people.
