    Could rabbits be rodents?

Since rabbits were always classified as rodents before the 20th century, is it possible that there is a such thing
as rodentness, that they still remain in their essence and intrinsic nature a rodent, what we originally classified them as, even though in the 20th century we called them by a different name??

Australia has the worst rabbit problem of any continent. They're deemed vermin over there.

i have had rabbits for around 8 years now and currently have two rabbits. I remember a discussion with Jessica once, my mum always called them rodents and jumping rats, and after owning them, i see the same characteristics. but they're just cute. i also find them extremely similar to a kangaroo. they have big back legs, they get up on their back legs to look and they look so much like a kangaroo when doing so.

one intital reasoning as to why i catagorised them as rodents too was their teeth never stop growing, like a rodent. they need to constantly chew, and as we found out th hard way, they'll chew anything you got you in your house. chairs, furniture, fly screen, cables, sofa, couch, floor, carpet.

i used to shoot them with nerf bullets .... they eat them.

I did not know they were considered rodents prior to the 20th century. I think with the development of technology, discovery of DNA and the like, we probably will not see rabbits recategorized as rodents or re-rodentified. However, I believe taxonomy has some interesting and different approaches to classification. The current standard is called Cladistics and it's different than what Linnaeus used, who pioneered taxonomy. Cladistics is not without it's detractors, and I've read a few bizarre edge cases with that approach, so maybe some different approach comes along eventually.

There are certain areas here where rabbits run fairly rampant, I do think of them as like essentially non-arboreal squirrels.

a symptom of the universe, a love that never dies!
