Have you always felt like you had a sense of direction and been able to discern what is morally sound or sane?
Do you feel you know how to spend your time diligently using your gifts and talents and how to invest them (and spend your time)?
If yes, you seem to have a working compass.
I had mania, flight of ideas, that ended yesterday, and is always followed by a depression.
During those cycles there really isn't a working compass and it is hard to navigate and know which direction is forward.
What is appropriate is very relative don't you think?
I suppose following the golden rule is a good compass, but that isn't always clear. Sometimes the best charitable thing you can do for someone is help them learn by not enabling them and institution of discipline.
In the end, one must follow their heart and conscience , but both can have their faults.
