    Edit errors

Alot of our modern day lives we are having to communicate via email, phone texts & online social media instant messaging communications.

On some online writing forums (like awesome Tree fort) thankfully if you make a writing error in a post you published that has grammar mistakes, missed out a word, wrong punctuation, spelling errors etc you can press the 'Edit' feature and correct the writing errors.

I think one of my OCD habits is that both professionally & personally I usually make sure to double-check or triple check an email, text or online instant message that all the writing is correct before pressing send however there are times when I still annoyingly make written errors before sending?

If I make an annoying spelling mistake in a text message then I usually reply with another text, for example I've sent a text to a friend saying "The weather today was nice so I decded to go for a walk..."

So as you can see I've made an error with the word "decded" it should be spelt correctly as "decided"

If I've immediately noticed the text error then I will like 2, 5 etc mins later usually I'll then follow up with another text with the word spelt correct & I like to add " * "

So in the above text error my follow up corrected text that I'll send will be " *decided "

Does it annoy y'all if you send a text or an email that has spelling, grammar & punctuation errors & if you've noticed the errors do you follow up send another text or email with the corrections?

Coincidentally since creating this new post today about Edit errors I've just now in the past hour received a professional email and the person made a small error by having the wrong person's name at the start of the email.

I love that immediately 2mins later I received a follow up email saying "apologies for this error I was meant to have your name instead of the other person"

I nicely emailed back to say no worries it's fine and thank you very much for your email.

Have y'all experienced any professional work-related email errors and if you've noticed them do you correct your error in a new email?

I just now remembered some more Edit error scenarios...

Probably the most annoying professional writing experiences have been in work scenarios where I've had to 'Cc' many people in a group email and even though I thought I'd checked everything before sending it I annoyingly later notice in the 'sent' messages that I stupidly made some errors (spelling, grammar etc) if the error is not too bad then I don't even bother to reply with a new corrected email because it's just too embarrassing lol?

I'm pretty good with spelling, grammar is my bugaboo. I don't worry about it too much on here because I often switch between a casual and formal voice. I'll double check in a formal setting.

AMEN! And all this time I've felt like a solitary freak! I've been living with OCD for as long as I can remember, and checking my posts/comments for writing errors 2-3 times would be a blessing for me big time - How does 10-15 times grab you? Also, my sense of humor (persona) is more times than not taken seriously, and I wonder how anybody in his/her right mind could possibly think that a daft internet character I've created is actually a real person....haha.

But there are creative ways to deal with such a crisis. For example, I have a timer I set for half an hour to make sure I don't go blind before I post a comment. Also, I am hopeless when it comes to punctuation and grammar, so I've had to figure out effective ways to cope and remain sane: I use LOTS of dashes - and figure out a new way to say something old when I'm not certain about the "correct" way to write a sentence:

A basket of peaches are heavy - sounds wrong to me. Shouldn't it be is? Instead of wasting a precious hour coming up with the academic solution - I just play around w/the sentence big time until it sounds right to me:

This basket is way too heavy for me - must be all the damn peaches!

Yes, it does sound a bit daft, but at least nobody can accuse me of being a high school drop out or worse... haha. Also, bold is my best friend - in addition to plenty of big times - and not being shy when it comes to haha.

        I'm totally digging your thread!

        P.S.
When people tell me there is no method to my writing madness - I politely suggest they might take a long peek at the awesome writing style of the great Emily Dickinson:

niftypebble21 Right. "A basket of peaches is heavy" is correct. But when my OCD kicks in about something - I just find a new way to make the same sentence work :-)

It all makes sense, though. "A basket of peaches are heavy" would literally be a basket of "peaches are heavy." Which doesn't make sense.

west country accent/dialect often uses "is" when it should be "are", so I learned to correct myself. I remember it like:
          is = singular
          are = plural

there is only a single basket of peaches so it is "the basket of peaches IS heavy"
but there are many peaches so "the peaches ARE heavy"

Omg this is not edit error scenario but with regards to writing an email in the past 2 days I had been working on an email to a friend and I finally in past 5mins just now pressed send and annoyingly not sure WTF what happened but perhaps my internet disconnected for a brief moment and then when I checked the sent folder there was no record of it : (

And annoyingly there was not even a draft version of it saved :-/

It right now feels like that that email never even happened lol smh?

I have just now sent my friend a quick FB message to ask whether or not they received my email today if not OMG I will have to re-do the entire email smh?

Obviously not the end of the world but just feels very annoying right now SMH?

Has that ever happend to you, you've just finished an email you press send and there is no record of it in your sent emails folder??

It annoys me way more than it has any reason to when I send a spelling error like that. I generally double check my emails and texts, not so much forum posts since there is an edit option there. If I do send an error over text I'll correct it if I notice right away, but after a few seconds I feel like that window has passed and I just have to live with it.

If we're talking about professional email etiquette, my number one complaint is the huge percentage of people who insist on hitting reply all to say "thanks" or "remove me from this mailing list".

A few months ago I wrote an email at work, then went back and changed "He" to "They" because I realized multiple people were involved. But then I forgot to change the verb, so it ended up saying "They is" instead of "They are"

It went to a couple of higher ups at work as well as an important client.

No take backsies once that email is sent. It ranks up there as one of my most embarrassing moments lol. I'm such a stickler for professionalism. I triple check eveerrything at work normally

Meliai omg yup I know what you mean when it comes to professional email writing just the fact that once the email is sent that is it there is no way to reverse what happened? & then there is the feelings of worry & fear that especially if it is an important work email that worrying feeling of whether the higher ups are going to forever judge you has that tarnished their view of your professioanl work?

Only once or twice? But I don't send a lot of email (I really am a sort of recluse), and when I do I always include a visual or two to help make my point better big time. Also, I send a Bcc to myself, so my OCD won't get the best of me... haha. We should start an OCD Writers' Club ;-)

PacificDude with regards to OCD the fact that you just now quoted me in your post I noticed I'd spelt the word 'receord' incorrect it should be 'record' lol? so I've just now had to go back to that post & edit & correct the spelling error lol and now that you've mentioned 'Bcc' that is a very cool way to use it to help cope with OCD not getting the better of us I actually don't think I've ever used the 'Bcc' feature before.

niftypebble21 Funny how that works.. haha. Yeah, the Bcc option always works for me... let's not let OCD get the best of us :-)

I don't make my living with words and there's a reason. I've always struggled with proper grammar and it shows.
just now I'm not sure if it's there or their, I know it's not they're.
So I rarely notice other people's errors let alone mine. But I do notice I make a lot of fuckups when typing on my phone. I also mess up when I change the structure of my sentences because I try not to aggressively attack people on forums.

hi JoeKing if you're talking about something like the location of an object like "the table is over there" then you use the word 'there' and if you talk about a person / people owning a thing like in this sentence "the tyres on their car are worn out" you'd use their.
In your post you were correct in your sentence "I don't make my living with words and there's a reason." you could have said "there is" or you're fine saying "there's" : )

So yup I had heard of the name Emily Dickinson I just not realised that she is regarded as a great Amercian poet until today when you mentioned her I not even read any of her poems, so I just now typed online 'Emily Dickinson's best poems' and I found this:
            https://interestingliterature.com/20...e-should-read/

I like this poem about hope she's written : )

“Hope” is the thing with feathers - (314)

“Hope” is the thing with feathers -

That perches in the soul -

And sings the tune without the words -

And never stops - at all -

And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard -

And sore must be the storm -

That could abash the little Bird

That kept so many warm -

I’ve heard it in the chillest land -

And on the strangest Sea -

Yet - never - in Extremity,

It asked a crumb - of me.

It is a beautiful poem ♥

niftypebble21 You know, I can't pick just one? That's how good she is! Haha. I guess if I had to narrow it down - it would be a short one I heard somebody reciting on PBS television when I was 10 years old :-)
