    Ha! Great thread idea!

Mid 80s we had the Atari 2600. My brother, two cousins and I would stay up until sunrise playing that thing. Great memories!

    Pitfall!

Same, we also had an Atari in the late 80s. Only recall Frogger though, and some singleplayer racing game. It was fun at the time but am over these kind of games now. In fact, I almost forget about the Atari if I think about when I got into gaming: usually take the N64 and games like Duke Nukem on (my dads work) PC as starting point. Oh and Prince of Persia of course

Then, somewhere in the 90s they made a 3d game of Prince of Persia that I was eager to try out of nostalgia. Freaking loved that one! Also had a very solid story and a heartbreaking romantic ending :-D

Hm, it was already 2003 when that one came out I see..! Definitely a hoot. Prince of Persia - The sands of time

Commodore 64 was my first console. Mom picked one up at a garage sale sometime around 86 or 87. Gorf, Q-Bert, Seawolf, and Blueprint were all games I liked to play. It wasn't til around 89 that dad surprised us one afternoon, out of the blue, with a Nintendo. In the 90s I was all about the Sega Genesis.

Commodore 64 here too. I loved this game Archon which was like battle chess a bit. Must have been 5, it was before I got a Nintendo.

My bro got a Nintendo around that time, but it was after I had left home. I remember playing the first Legend Of Zelda when I visited.

Zelda is probably my favorite series. I owned the second one, Adventure of Link.

NES was my first console. Although I did have a floppy disk for our original MS DOS computer that included a lot of those Atari games too.

As a general rule, I like to play really old games or relatively new games. New games are great for obvious reasons, but they tend to be so huge they require hours of learning and it takes literally days to get through. Old games are great for a quick pick up and play experience. Games in between, while they were great at the time, now they are too big for pick up and play but too outdated for the things that make newer games great.

The main exception I can think of is RPGs. Try playing any JRPG on NES now and you'll consider suicide before you're done. Those really started to get good around the PS1 era and have generally just kept improving since.

Do you know about emulators, nifty? You can play old games on your computer.

                      hi neon,

It's not too complicated. Emulators are different consoles and roms are different games.

I've never gotten those to work well. I've never gotten a joystick perfectly calibrated. Also, the screen will freeze for inexplicable (to me) reasons.

Barbarian was a cool game on Amiga I think.
Sword fighting and if you did a spinning strike you could chop off the opponents head then a little dude would come out and drag the body off while kicking the head off the screen.

in my experience, they work great for old consoles, but as the console gets more advanced you run into more and more problems with the emulators. there's also so many different emulators for each console, i'm sure some work much better than others.

i haven't had great luck with joysticks either. luckily, i mostly use emulators for games that were meant to be played with the old fashioned d-pad. although even that can be troublesome with diagonals.

For Zelda / OoT my joystick trouble was trying to make sharp turns. My character would kind of get "stuck" or something, slow down and shit. Very frustrating. I'm totally old school on that now. Gradually buying used N64s and Zelda V1.0 cartridges as I find them. Got some great glitches on that one.
