How has beating yourself up benefited others?

I find maybe self-flagellation can be a good thing, like if you are a priest who molested somebodies kid, flagellation in the form of putting a 12 gage shotgun to your chin and pulling the trigger as penance , could benefit society, especially if you did so before before raping choir boys.

But as a general rule, I find beating myself up over the people I wrong just makes me more hateful , and more people get wronged by me as a result.

You can beat yourself up for eternity and it isn't helping the people you wronged.

    Or is it?

Matthew Mussolini This is so weird. I think you just solved the enigma of that odd phrase from Love Story that was driving me insane:

Don't beat yourself up Matt. It's not a good look.

It is not helping. If it was in the past, let it stay there and make a determination not to do it again. Throw your anxiety on God in prayer and do not take it back.
