    Citizens Arrest

    https://www.cbs58.com/news/brookfiel...om-ulta-beauty

I was literally at the perfect place n time that this crime was happening.

So I was waiting for my special lady friend to come out from the makeup retailer. All of the sudden these very two covid mask wearing individuals come running out with lil white baskets.

They both dashed right towards my parked vehicle. (50 yards). Before I knew it they both jumped in a vehicle right next to me and drove off in a car with no license plate.

My special lady friend came out minutes later and told me about what had happened in the store.

I got to thinkin about the whole citizens arrest thing. If it's even a noble thing anymore.

I can just see myself stopping the shoplifting driver, him getting an owie from me man handling him, then me getting sued, while he pays a fine with no time.

I guess this is a thread just to openly ask how far you put yourself out there getting involved with stopping a crime.

An idiot the other day was circling our streets and alley with 2 police cars after him. On his 3rd pass in my alley I wailed a full 12oz can of unopened Arizona ice tea into the drivers window as it come passed my pine tree, booosh into the side his face and he didnt even see it coming.. and I threw that fucker hard. I heard chirp chirp round the corner and he was fully boxed by 3 cop cars. I went back in the house.. nobody bother me about it. probably not from around here anyways.

I went to search for the tea can after the flatbed left and it wasnt on the ground.. Thats going be sticky..

dude was some sunken faced white guy in an old jeep cherokee with a lot of rust and missing parts. my guess he was buying heroin and was spotted in the junker and they took pursuit.
Can tell not from around here. Because Cops will let ya go with some personal smack and crack here all he had to do was pull over. Even without a license they would let him roll away after they code4.

Not sure how far I would put myself out there in such a situation, but the risk of being sued afterwards would not be the thing stopping me. What might help a little there of course is that I do not live in the USA (sue central :P )

If I saw a guy physically assaulting a woman or a child, I would likely intervene. Outside of that, I probably wouldn't involve myself. Stuff like theft, I've never really felt an obligation to get involved with but other situations that come to mind, I wouldn't because of the lack of or twisted ethics these days.

can't hear citizen's arrest without thinking about this:

      citizen's arrest

i don't think i've ever even heard of a citizen's arrest outside that episode.

i don't know how to answer the actual question. i would imagine it would depend on a lot of different factors. although an actual citizen's arrest is not something that would even cross my mind.

In that situation i wouldn't have let them get away. It may have taken some time to figure out what was happening but i would've figured it out quickly. As they attempted to drive off i would've sprinted towards the car and jump on the back of their car. They would've try to swerve to shake me off but it wouldn't have worked. Then i would've punched thru the glass and made my way into the back of their car. I would take control of the steering wheel and crash their car into a pole. Then go all Jackie Chan on their ass. Then i would take what they have stolen and returned it to the store manager. Everyone around would be applauding telling me how courageous and brave i am but i would've done the whole typical modest response, like; "Oh, that was nothing. I did what i felt was right, that's all." ??

I believed your story until the part about being modest at the end ;-)

Citizen's arrest laws may vary from state to state, but I think generally you can make a citizen's arrest if you see a felony in progress. Can't just be a suspected felony though.

Imho, it's probably better not to get involved unless it's something very serious

Most of the time security guards and rent-a-cops are not allowed to do citizens arrests. They are told to observe and report. Observe the crime; don’t get involved. It’s awful.
