How much moderation is too much?

    On a free speech forum?
should what you say be changed from its original context?
    should it be deleted?
what about that is free speech?

i've always been a forum libertarian. i prefer to let people say what they will, as long as they're not doing something unquestionably awful, like spamming.

outside of spammers, to my recollection i've only ever banned/censored/whatevered one person, and that's just because he was legitimately trying to hack into the forum and break things. OP, you're probably the only person around who might actually know what i'm referring to. for the record, i hold no animosity toward the guy and even though we haven't actually talked in years, we were on good terms last i knew and we're still friends on facebook.

I'm definitely NOT for editing anything people write. Those are their words and they don't belong to me. Even if it is misspelled or grammatically incorrect I have no way of being positive they didn't intend for it to be that way.

Moving things to more appropriate forums is cool, keeps the place more orderly. It's kinda like zoning for cities.

Banning should be a last resort, typically after a few warnings regarding the inappropriate behavior. Of course kiddie porn, for example, would get an immediate ban and reported to...uh, who do we report such things to? FBI?

            When it's...

            1) biased(to a particular user or belief system)
            2) trolling(going onto dog forum to rant about much how dogs suck)
            3) intentionally offensive

Not being able to discuss moderation policy is definitely too much moderation.

Banning a member or deleting their content because you don't agree with them is also too much.

I think the most blatant example of this was when a member (I forget his name) defended nuclear energy, and Skip banned him allegedly because only a troll would be for nuclear energy.

A lot of people got banned from HF because of their politics though.

Draw a line in the sand at personal abuse, racism, etc.
I know you guys don't like the admins on hf, but really be a bit respectful.
Mutual respect needs to be around here.

I'm all for mutual respect, but it needs to be real. You can't legislate respect by banning people you don't agree with. If anything, that has the opposite effect.

It can have the opposite effect. However, i did notice that some of you did break their rules on trolling.
All i say to this is take responsibility whenever you fuck up and don't lose ya cool when something like this happens.

How do I take responsibility when they change my 14 day ban to a permanent ban before it is over?

My only ban in over a decade of using the site, too.

                        Ok that's also fair enough.
Did you used to be a mod on hf?

I ask this because there was a mod on there who was often threatening us newbies with bans.
Some of us copped ip bans.

I seem to remember all the youtube videos you had come up with. They were in the middle of great threads but then would provide a laugh to somewhat of a serious matter.

For example i think this was you who brought up the whole fartgate thing in the middle of the election thread.
Where one of the MP's dropped his guts during his presser. Funny stuff!

Always review your actions after you got banned.
I think i remember you used to give everyone a bake when you replied to posts.
Maybe try and be less demonstrotive when answering other peoples posts.

Mustard Tiger has the same issue. But mind you he comes across as an internet troll.
The amount of lies he tells people is an issue.

My point is that, even if I thought it was warranted, how do I make changes when my ban is changed to permanent before I'm even back on the site?

I don't know what "give everyone a bake" means, but I don't think it is as fun as it sounds, and I doubt that it was against the rules.

I'm also not sure about giving everyone a bake. But it definitely sounds like a great way to build site traffic.

The mods on Hip clearly favor some over others as well. It was easy to spot.
