    "Thank You For Your Sevice"

I do some volunteer work, and every so often I come across a vet with PTSD. In my most recent reply to a vet, I said "thank you for your service", because that seemed like a respectful thing to say. This particular guy didn't post again, and I'm wonder if the phrase may have freaked him out, since I think it's also the title of a movie about vets with PTSD. Any thoughts?

I can't really say without more information. Could it just be a coincidence? I'm sometimes embarrassed when people say that to me, but that's because I didn't really do anything...well, I sat in Oklahoma and drank & smoked pot as often as possible. That was my service. Perma-war hadn't been invented yet.

So does this person in fact have PTSD? My dad was a Vietnam vet and just didn't want to talk about what went on over there, unless he was very drunk.

Yeah, it could totally be a coincidence. I'm just trying to figure out if the phrase might freak out a vet or not because of associations with the movie.

Presumably. I have to go with what people say about themselves.

I'm not familiar with the movie you're talking about. But my hunch is you're reading too much into it.

i'm not a vet, but i've never even heard of that movie. i agree that you're probably reading too much into it; if anything i'd say it's more likely he was annoyed because it seems like vets can't walk down the street without someone saying that to them and most of the time it seems a little disingenuous. the ptsd connection seems like more of a leap.

Ok, I just wanted to make sure that vets with PTSD wouldn't immediately make some association with the movie and freak out

I intentionally try to hide my military service so I don’t have to hear it. I don’t wear any clothing that identifies or bumper stickers. Just my preference. Not a war veteran.

It's really not your problem if someone can't take something with your intended intentions. I'm sure he has a ton of s hit going on that doesn't involve you. He could have stopped talking for a number of reasons. I doubt it was you, and even if it was, you did nothing wrong.

Something depressing about that Miles Teller guy (the star of Thankyou for your service) no matter what he is in, just brings the show down

The movie wasn't really meant to be happy, so maybe he as a good pick

I'd be aware of it just in case that vet might be depressed often.

Know how you're supposed to do this to local police? Thanking them for their service...

I did that a while back. He fuckin smiled at me and just kept staring and smiling. It pissed me off, and I think that's the reaction he wanted.

I was being sincere. Fuck it, never again.

Actually I just Googled "sevice" and the Urban Dictionary definition is "a fat, lying motherfucker." So it may not be a typo and we've just misunderstood the point of the thread...or something.

i wonder how that came about. did they know someone named sevice who fit that description? i kind of want to start using it though, because there's a lot of fat, lying motherfuckers that need to have their seviceness pointed out to them.

Oh, you'll see me using it here. I just wished I could have used it on those sevices at the other place.

I think sometimes if somebody just wants to bad mouth somebody that they know, they'll put an insulting definition of their name in UD. Maybe every once in a while it gains broader currency.
