  • US Mass Shootings (consolidated thread)

Seems like one happens every three days in the US of A, so we might as well discuss all of them here and the fallout and how America can possibly heal and deal with this terrible plague in their great country.

I've never heard a clear definition of "Gun Culture". Seems like if it was a thing we'd see a lot more about guns. Like TV commercials, professional matches and teams, armed beauty pageants and chefs who kill whatever they're going to cook. Surely we'd have guns on our cars by now, imagine the effect on road rage!

Gun violence is a small price to pay, for the ability of the vulnerable and disabled to defend themselves against intruders and assailants in my country.

So you're saying you're cool with innocent people dying? Yes or no?

Whenever Democrats are elected to office, gun and ammo sales soar. The first sentence you typed is the absolute truth, and I don't see it changing in the next 100 years. In fact I think it's gotten worse over my lifetime. The paranoia associated with guns and government over here is something a foreigner just wouldn't understand. Hell, I don't understand it. I worked with a guy, 20 years old, that had already stockpiled 25,000 rounds of ammo...or so he says. I'd tell you a few of the guns he'd bought only I had never heard of them and can't remember now. When I was growing up we had a 12 gauge shotgun, a couple of hunting rifles and a .22 pistol. The stuff people buy these days, and the price they pay for them, confounds me.

Mental health care in the US is sketchy. Too many people still believe that mental health isn't that big of a deal, particularly men. All these shootings are being carried out by men, and they aren't very likely to seek help when symptoms of psychosis first begin. We are taught to "take it like a man", so to speak. And as I discovered when I was trying to get help for my dad, it's practically impossible to have someone committed. I could get him in a treatment facility just fine, but he'd just check himself out the next day. A person has to actually do something harmful to be proven dangerous. It cost my dad his life.

As far as gun control goes, I'd consider it if I thought it would actually do some good. But it won't. The genie is out of the bottle. There are already 393 million guns being held by civilians in the US...that's 46% of the global total of firearms owned by civilians. If I'm a criminal, and I want a gun, then I just break into two or three houses and odds are I'll find a gun. Assuming, of course, that I don't get shot.

Until an overwhelming majority of Americans are revolted at the very idea of guns nothing is going to change.

What a disgraceful attitude to take.

No, I don’t like intruders murdering innocent people who are physically unable to fight them off. A gun equalizes the playing field.

I hope all you anti-gun retards get your life saved by a good guy with a gun one day.

It sounds like that your country has a really bad policy with guns.
There should be an investigation on where the weapons are being sold at and make some tougher laws against the use of guns.

I would rather be killed than to kill someone. Thus, no guns. Although that does not mean I would stand down. I would still try every maneuver or self defense technique available at the time.

we don't have a problem with gun violence in Australia actually.
