This is why police shouldn't be first line when there is a mental health emergency. They are not trained to handle it. If they sent in a mental health professional with police standing down this probably would've been handled differently. I have seen first hand how it plays out when there's an emergency psych unit called in. It works. It would also be cheaper than having to deal with riots and the aftermath.

I'm no expert on the situation but I have been in a very small apartment with someone who had severe bipolar disorder (which is what Walter Wallace had). I had to call 911 because they were out of control and a threat to themselves and me. The emergency psychiatric team was called to come in to deescalate the situation. They were the trained professionals. They did it. That is their job. I am not a trained professional in that field. The police are not either. It can be done and it has been done. I'm not saying don't have police be there what I'm saying is have the emergency psychiatric team be the first line there.
This is a fucking no brainer.
Shooting someone 14 times is overkill. That is inexcusable.
