I'm interested to see what comes of this.

Regardless of the more unfounded conspiracy ideas, once I read that her conservatorship means she cannot vote, cannot spend her own money and cannot hire her own lawyer, I felt pretty uncomfortable about it. It doesn't sound right, and the fact that her father and manager are making a lot of money out of it sounds worse.

I haven't read into it yet, but all that sounds pretty damned illegal...not being able to vote especially. And since when can't a person spend their own money?

I'm not sure about the voting thing but if someone is mentally ill it's not uncommon for them to have a "Payee" who essentially takes the checks and doles out the money. Especially if that mentally ill person is doing shit like spending all of their money the day they get it on stupid shit, continuously overdrawing their bank accounts, running up incredibly high credit card bills etc.

I'm also willing to bet that Brittney is in pretty heavy debt to her record label.

Here's a basic rundown of a record contract:

A recording contract might seem like the Holy Grail, but record labels are not charity concerns and their contracts are not set up with your interests in mind. Our guide to contract terms, written by an entertainment lawyer, explains what it all means and what the implications are for the artist.

Some things to remember when you hear about an artist signing a $5 million dollar record deal is that it's not like a $5 million dollar sports contract where the athlete is promised $5 million in payment over a certain amount of time. It's a $5 million dollar advance on future record sales. On top of that the people who write the checks in this situation budget so tight it's like squeezing a nickel so tight that the buffalo shits. They pick the producer, the songwriters, the engineers etc. Then there's tour support that also comes out of that. Usually the only way that an artist makes money is of merchandising, endorsements etc.

But the industry has dipped it's fingers into the merchandising pie too. It's called a 360 deal where they throw you a bigger advance and cross collateralize your merch into the deal, so if your albums start tanking they can use your merch to soak up the difference, plus as an insurance policy on getting their money back they will cross collateralize all of your albums so if the first ones sell great and there's diminishing returns on the future ones then the good selling ones will pay off the bad selling ones.

            C/S,
            Rev J

I read that it's usually used for people in a coma or severely mentally disabled. I think this is a misuse of it. She's also not allowed to have children or get married.

weren't you the one who recommended the girl with the dragon tattoo books? the titular character was in the same sort of program, at least at the beginning (i've just started the second book so i don't know what ends up happening). those books are the only reason i had any idea such a program existed.

That book was set in one of those socialist Utopian countries that gives unfocusedanakin an erection...I expect that kind of thing there. But, naively I suppose, I don't expect that here.

Well her brother says it's been great for the family and I guess he should know better than random fans in the internet.

But it does strike me that he says good for the family, not good for Britney specifically.

This is Doctor Grande. He suspects but a diagnose and made public that Britney has bipolar disorder which is a progressive disease.

"doctor grande" sounds like a character from a taco bell commercial.

I'm sure it helps Britney's mental welfare to be stripped of her independence. Thank goodness people with sensible brains are looking out for her.

I thought Brittney originally took herself "off schedules" or whatever and signed herself in for help...

This doesn't sound right that they would do this, especially when she has been in much worse shape, publicly, jmo

They could easily take advantage of this situation, and I think that, unfortunately, Brittney has a family that would take every teensy bit of advantage they could. I feel for her, and have half followed this also.

just because she has been in worse shape publicly doesn't necessarily mean that she hasn't completely lost it behind the scenes.

of course i haven't followed this at all, so i don't know any details. i just know it's hard to really know what's going on with someone just based on their public persona. look at all the celebrities who have committed suicide while being seemingly fine in public.

If "guardanianship" was given to her father and mother, or whoever, they would basically have control of all her money....and I'd bet the farm she has a bundle...plus they would "be in control of" (get) her royalities.

You've very right about the celebrities that committed suicide while having a "normal for a star" public personna... It really makes me sad, but also highlights the difference between Britney and those others...she has actively sought help.
