Based on an interview I heard with a sports reporter in Tokyo during the Olympics, I believe the host city organizers have to kowtow to an International Olympic Committee or suffer potential fines and stuff. And who knows if the Olympic Committee gets orders from some other higher up organization.

The reporter said that outside of the olympic grounds, the city was basically normal and not subject to any of the Covid restrictions that the Olympics were.

Just to follow up, I know you didn't mention anything about Covid in the OP but other than maybe allowing the transgender to compete, I'm not sure what any of those incidents would have to do with the city organizers.

Simone Biles had the twisties though, I gotta take up for mah girl. The twisties are a phenomenon where a gymnast can suddenly become disoriented while in the air. At Simone Biles' skill level she could easily kill herself if she lost her place while in midair. I saw a video where she was training at a gym in Tokyo after withdrawing from the Olympics that had soft foam for her to land on, and she literally just kept falling. That kind of fall on a hard surface would paralyze or kill her

Seriously though, the talent level of someone who can do that stuff is astounding, much less the ability to spin so hard, land, not only stay upright but skate on like nothing happened is amazing. It's beautiful to watch but the talent level is likely not appreciated as much as it should be.

However I will say Olympic Games are a good way to see which countries are better than others without going to war.
