These two former Vaudevillian performers originally created this as an improvisation. Then they worked it into comedy gold. So many humorous American-isms were employed to pull this off. Baseball was a natural simply because players really did have weird nicknames. I read an account years ago that they did this in a night club and each had a napkin with the names and positions so they didn't lose track. They refined it many times over the years.
To this day they still blow my fucking mind.
