This might seem a bit early but I have had an idea on a different way to think about them, so I wanted to tell you all about it now so you could consider.
They typically fail because we choose things that are usually changes we think we should make anyway, things we intend to stick to FOREVER. Like a better diet, more exercise, no/less drinking etc. They're impossible, and if we were going to do them, we'd do them any time of year. We'll always give up early when we know there's almost zero chance of sticking to it.
I think a more fun way to look at it is to come up with things that are only for the year ahead. Right from the start you know it's only a year, there is an ending point; it becomes more of a challenge than an attempt to change yourself.
And you can vary how easy/hard it is. So for example you could say that for the whole of 2021 you are going to go for a walk every day. Or you could say once a week. OR even once a month. So then all you have to do is go for twelve walks in the whole year.. Easy. An attainable challenge. Changing your diet might feel impossible but if you have to eat healthily, or not drink coffee, or not smoke for ONE day of the week, that's perfectly doable.
Doing it this way, I'd bet you'll probably find by 2022 you have developed new habits. And yet if you haven't.. you can just abandon the whole thing and make new resolutions for the next year.
