    Jettison

Today marks the 10th day of the ZenHookah site. As lifeboats go, I think it served us well. With hundreds of posts to show, it kept us connected while we worked through our disappointment with a place we've known for many many years. And it provided a platform for discussions about the future. Without it, we had reddit, but, I personally had problems keeping conversations straight. I still don't know how to find one that's currently being used. Kicking that one to the curb is not difficult either.

    So here are some reminders..................

    250,000 posts!

We have 215 members, 44 active. Most of the members from the initial formation of the site are still around or still members. Somehow we had 2,330 users online at 05:50 AM on 03-29-2023.

While it seems like things are slowing down, we hit 200,000 posts on 7-01-2022, I’m more inclined to think we’re mellowing out. The same folks who have left or who stay gone for months at a time would likely be in the same mode regardless of what happens here

And of course we have a quarter million posts that didn’t go anywhere else. Imagine what it might be like if we advertised. Also, the Pit has over 35,000 posts, so it seems to have served its purpose to some degree.

Think about where we'd be without those 10 days. I owe the reddit site for the inspiration. In 10 days we got everybody back into normal forum communications mode. I hope we didn't lose too many though.

Today after work I messaged Pete on HF and asked him to remove the banners from underneath my screen name. I'll no longer log on as tumbling.dice.

I have several other names there. I may be dropping turds on HF for years to come. Since I can't seem to assemble a vigilante squad to go over there, I'll just have to lone wolf it.

It reminds me of Apollo 13, the movie, when they undocked from the lunar module, Aquarius. It had been their lifeboat. Without it their bodies would probably still be circling the moon. Now it was going to burn up in the atmosphere after saving their lives. Leaving only a plutonium core battery left to sink to the ocean floor!

I had no idea the lunar module was nuclear. And it survived re-entry?

No, most of it burned away. But the battery was shielded substantially, same as for the Voyager probes. It works by catching electrons from decaying plutonium and lasts for decades. The LM needed one because of weight limitations. What I don't know is if they would have left it on the moon as opposed to being part of the top section that carried them back to the command module.

But Apollo 13 brought the whole thing back. That was never anticipated.

What wasn't published is how long they had to track it and when it actually came down. But there's no way it would have escaped earth's gravity. At even 100 miles above the earth gravity is only like 0.1% lower than on the surface. So you fall right away. Unless, you're in orbit.

I lied. It was really easy to log in with a new account. But it's still extremely boring.

So it's not an IP ban then. Interesting.

OK, Toast is now the moderator of ZenHookah/Hip Zone. Be sure to be nice to him when you go over there. He can ban you!
