Listening to Appetite for Destruction last night on the way home, first time in ages. I'm one that always liked Sweet Child, but last night, really got into Rocket Queen more
In a vacuum, I'd go with Sweet Child of Mine. It's got a great intro, some really awesome dynamics: from the breezy verses, to the pensive bridge, into the blistering guitar solo that takes the song into the Rockin finale. It has all the qualities of an EPIC Rock song without the pretense.
Only aspect of Rocket Queen I think I might slightly prefer is the melody of the chorus, although it's not really a lyrical gem. But the breakdown with the sex moans is over the top and while it has good dynamics as well, the ending feels slightly more contrived than Sweet Child of Mine.
Sweet Child of Mine is really overplayed, perhaps even more so here, near where they originated. So I'll often turn the station if I hear it on the radio these days but I won't hold that against the song when rating/analyzing it.
I'd like to add that I heard White Zombie's More Human than Human before I heard Rocket Queen, which also features a sex moan, so the novelty of the sex moan thing probably didn't have the impact on me that it might have had, had I heard Rocket Queen first.
