Scary movies, Scary rides, Haunted Houses …….

    .... what are the attractions?
"The embers of our past lives lie smouldering within us awaiting the winds of remembrance to fan them in flames of reality." Dax.

A surface level answer is that the attraction is novelty and an adrenaline rush. However that can be attained many other ways, so probing deeper, there are varied psychological reasons. These forms of entertainment address the great unknown of death, making us contemplate our own mortality and in the case of haunted houses and some scary movies, providing mythology for supernatural phenomena. I think some people are fascinated by the fragility of the ego as well, which we may experience vicariously in movies or on rides and haunted houses.

I can't figure it out myself. I love scary stuff, but I never actually find it scary. Supernatural stories are just interesting to me. Haunted houses are fun too, although I really couldn't tell you why.

The first season freaked me out pretty deeply for some reason. The others were much more tolerable--but that one was difficult. But yeah, hi from a fellow wuss.

I'm quite selective with 'scary stuff'. It all depends on setting, atmosphere and other such details. I don't enjoy splatter horror really, I mean 1) the visual stuff does get to me when they're trying to make it look as realistic and gruesome as possible, and 2) I don't get anything out of it. It has to be combined with interesting ideas, plot or setting and when that is done I usually conclude the suprise scare moments and gruesome splatter action could have been left out for viewers like me.

I like scary stuff when it relates to ghosts or horror like existence due to supernatural, mystic or occult reasons. Like what happens to the sucked out victims in BBC's Dracula and when the protagonist finds them.
Or another fav example: The Others, with a similar plot as The 6th sense but the atmosphere and setting suits me better

Curiously enough I am much more into horror like themes in certain music than with any movie genre. Black metal is of course the best in that regard. Vampires, souls consumed by megalomania and hate, antichristian and plain satanic themes, eternal suffering and damnation, embracing the pointlessness of our existence and acknowedlgeing the harsness of nature, pure ad hominem aaahh. But why I am primarily attracted to that in this music? Hm well, maybe because no other form of art or entertainment has expressed it better imo

Those things appeal to me. Darkness and the dark side usually does. Don't know why. Maybe there isn't a real reason.

As we get older in age, things become less scary.

Except making it to the bathroom on time.
